Why Your Fiber Link is Dead: The 2-Minute Fix for Polarity & Tx/Rx Issues Between Switches

Your Fiber cabling is complte and you’ve inserted brand-new SFPs, cleaned the connectors, and used what looks like a perfect fiber patch cable… yet the link LEDs stay red or amber. No link. No traffic. Panic at 2 a.m. in the data center.

99% of the time, the problem is fiber polarity — specifically, Transmit (Tx) talking to Transmit and Receive (Rx) talking to Receive instead of Tx ↔ Rx.

Good news: it’s incredibly easy to understand and fix once you know the “two-lane highway” rule.

The Simple Truth About Fiber Optic Links

Fiber is full-duplex, which means it always uses two fibers:

  • One fiber sends data from Switch A → Switch B (Tx on A connects to Rx on B)
  • The second fiber sends data the opposite direction (Tx on B connects to Rx on A)

If you accidentally connect Tx-to-Tx and Rx-to-Rx, no light reaches the receiver. The link stays dead. It’s exactly like two cars driving toward each other in the same lane — total crash.

How Almost Every Switch and SFP Is Wired (The Universal Standard)

Look at any modern SFP or switch port with the connector clip facing up:

  • Left side = Transmit (Tx) — this is where the laser shoots out
  • Right side = Receive (Rx) — this is listening for incoming light

This left-Tx / right-Rx layout is followed by Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Mellanox/NVIDIA, FS.com, basically everyone.

The Magic of a Normal Duplex Lc-to-LC Patch Cable

The orange (multimode) or yellow (single-mode) duplex LC cables you buy off the shelf are almost always Type B (A-to-B) polarity.

What does that mean? The two fibers are intentionally crossed inside the cable.

→ When you plug both ends in normally, Tx on one switch automatically connects to Rx on the other. → You literally just plug it in. No brain required.

The Famous 2-Minute Fix When Nothing Lights Up

  1. Pull the duplex LC connector out of one switch only
  2. Rotate it 180° (flip it upside down so the clip that was on top is now on the bottom)
  3. Push it back in until it clicks

You just swapped the two fibers inside the connector. Polarity is now correct. Green LEDs appear in seconds.

Do this on only one end. Flipping both ends puts you right back where you started.

Just remember: Tx must always talk to Rx, and that one little flip is the universal fix that has saved countless night shifts around the world.
